On January 20th, 2020, FPCI in collaboration with the Ecuador Embassy in Jakarta convened a public discussion on Global Migration. The theme of the discussion was The Global Migration: Latest Play and Multilateral Response for the International Community.

The discussion highlighted Ecuador’s chairmanship of the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD). Professor Arturo Cabrera, Research Professor at Leiden University and former Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs of the Ecuador Foreign Ministry in 2009 – 2010 spoke for this forum. He addressed the challenges and initiatives taken in regards to the global migration policy.

“We don’t have to think about migration as something good or bad. It is something natural. And will continue to exist. Now, if migration is good or bad it depends on how you manage it. It could be a win-win situation.”

“We must concentrate on migration and development, on incorporating more and more new actors into the conversation, which other than the states have a real role to play.” Prof. Cabrera said.

The discussion was attended by 120 people consisting of South American Ambassadors and Diplomats, IOM officers, researchers, professionals, students, and the public.
